At the invitation of the exhibition project Archipel TXL, we explore the island as a (non-)place of isolation, longing, fiction, and experimentation—and design new, speculative islands, including the Island of Our Inner Child, Social Media Paradise, NFT Mania, Refugia, Cookie Island, Gated Freedom, Prison Island, the Island of Colonial Amnesia, and the Island of Happiness.
Our work is guided by philosophical and design-critical perspectives, including Foucault’s heterotopias, Dunne & Raby’s Speculative Everything, Stöppel’s sign systems, and Metahaven’s Sealand. By combining lab-based practical work, design, and theory we create kinetic poster worlds that report on, promote, or warn people about our islands in simultaneously alluring and unsettling ways.
