The students' research begins with the interface between the analog and the digital. Inspired by the work of Paula Troxler, Rebecca Stephany, and the zines in the F*Word exhibition at MK&G, they chose the scanner as the tool to investigate. They want to use this easily accessible reproduction tool for a different purpose, to abstract objects, to deconstruct writing, and to welcome glitches and coincidences. They look at the history of zines and come across punk fanzines by influential feminist bands such as Riot Grrrls and Bikini Kill. After a workshop and further experimentation with different scanning methods, they continue to play with the resulting material in the digital realm.
