Formulating rules and formulas for good design is a constant concern for designers. This poster series ironically contrasts opposing positions. The essence of things, which Walter Gropius cites as the central means of determining external form, and the function, which, according to Louis Sullivan, should dominate design, cannot be defined in a uncontradictory manner. So how can a general formula be derived? Kesselskramer states, “Formulas work for scientists and mathematicians (...) We are too messy for white coats”,[*] “Make it meaningful. Meaningful communication. Because nobody wants to have meaningless communication.”[*]
