According to Ferdinand de Saussure, it is mainly one's own experiences and clichés that influence the signified, i.e., the ideal conception of a subject that results from reading the corresponding signifier. David Rudnick goes one step further by claiming that the aesthetic appearance of the word-matter, the signifier, also plays a role and can change the subject's conception. Inspired by the statements from Rudnick's lecture, these three posters examine this phenomenon by extending Saussure's system of signs.
