Soundcities makes sounds from very different cities visible and comparable. For this purpose, the database of the British artist Stanza, who collects and makes available audio files from all over the world, was used. Inspired by the graphic notations of artists John Cage and Iannis Xenakis, this work not only aims to translate sounds but also to convey an experience or a feeling. The starting point for the design process was photos of skyscrapers by Michael Wolf—symbols of densely populated cities. The aim was also to visualize the simultaneity and overlapping of sounds and noises in urban space. The results are individual city portraits in a simple design language. Circles and squares, which differ in color, shape, and size, are arranged closely together. All parameters are defined by the code. Only the choice of colors was individually influenced as the final design element.
