Ricardo Bachmann’s final thesis deals with the design of social segregation and urban exclusion. For his underlying research, Bachmann and Kimara Hungerbach—who together form the audiovisual research team Bang of Urban Districts (BoUD)—traveled to Detroit, where they stayed for six months. There, BoUD documented the geographic and everyday segregation produced within society in Detroit’s urban space. The term ‘redlining’ is explained in a historical context and illustrates the deliberate institutional actions of the past that have supported the process of ethnic division and spatial exclusion in U.S. cities. Using specific examples and locations of socio-political issues, Bachmann documents his investigation into the division of urban space and the analysis of power structures, and shows the resulting reaction of those who are often left by the wayside in dominant systems.
